Reviews

In 1994, following two critically acclaimed collections of traditional folk songs, Bob Dylan made a shrewd marketing move and went on MTV's Unplugged series at the height of its popularity. With a band that many fans had never seen before, Dylan performed twelve songs, 75% of which consisted of material from the sixties and early seventies.

Although a video and CD of the show were released with extra tracks, the DVD sports a full twelve-more than any previous format. In addition to newly arranged versions of classics such as "Tombstone Blues," "Like A Rolling Stone" and "Desolation Row," there are more recent compositions, like "Dignity" and "Shooting Star," along with the powerful anti-war sentiments of "John Brown."

While there are no revelatory moments here, Dylan gives a strong performance, with the help of long-time bass player Tony Garnier and guitarist Larry Campbell, who are both still part of the current line-up. Some fine pedal steel work from Bucky Baxter and organ from Brenden O'Brien give the arrangements some extra zest, and one can choose from PCM stereo, or 5.1 surround sound.
